I didn't know what it would take to get me back to blogging. The above chart should summarize it.
Statistics Canada reported yesterday that there was an all around increase in hate crimes in Canada in the past year. While I have to acknowledge that the methodological issues surrounding any survey data (foremost, did more crimes occur, or were more simply reported?) the numbers have jumped so significantly in the last year across the board that it would be difficult to say this is the reason for the recorded changes.
I am proud to be Canadian. However, it seems as if, despite all of the "progress" being made giving equal rights to Canada's minority groups that we (the collective "We") are still grossly undereducated about what equality means.
I am a person of faith. I believe that we are all created equal, we are all deeply loved, and that it hurts God when we hurt each other. It makes me absolutely sick to know that people are being targeted because of their race, religion, or sexual orientation at an ever-increasing rate. As Edmonton celebrates Pride Week, I would encourage people to put aside their judgment, because judgment does not belong to man, and to instead love their neighbor as they would love themselves. That I can handle.
